“We do not want any foreign troops on Maldivian soil…I made this promise to the people of Maldives and I will fulfill my promise from day one."
Mohammed Muizzu, who won the Maldives presidential election last month, is wasting no time in asking India to withdraw its troops.

Mohammad Muizzu, The Newly elected President of Maldives will take office in November. He told BBC in an exclusive interview that he had met the Indian Ambassador a few days ago.

“I have told them very clearly that every Indian soldier deployed in Maldives should be removed from here,” Muizzoo said.
Maldives has been under the influence of India for a long time and this demand of Muizzu can create tension between India and Maldives.

When Muizzu won the election, it was seen as a shock for India.

Especially because his rival and current President Ibrahim Solih had increased closeness with India after assuming power in 2018.

The coalition supporting Muizzu had described the relationship between India and Maldives as a threat to the security and sovereignty of Maldives because of Ibrahim Solih's 'India First' policy.

At the same time, Muizzu's alliance supports close relations with China. China has invested millions of dollars in the Maldives in the form of loans and grants for infrastructure and development projects.

Maldives is strategically important for monitoring a large part of the Indian Ocean. India also wants to establish its foothold here. India has also invested about two billion dollars for development in Maldives.

If Indian soldiers are forced to leave Maldives then it will definitely be a big blow for India.

India gifted two helicopters to Maldives in 2010 and 2013 and one small aircraft in 2020. Controversy had arisen regarding these also and the electoral alliance in Maldives which gave the slogan of 'India Out' has taken advantage of this.
