The Government of India Act,1858

Key features:- 

  1. This act made an end of company rule of India and began the rule of British crown in India.
  2. Ended the system of double Government.Abolished Court of Directors and Board of Control.
  3. A member of British cabinet (Secretary of state) was created for India.He was assisted by a 15 member council.
  4. Secretary of state governed India through Governor general of India.
  5. This act Changed Governor general to Viceroy and made him the direct representative of the British crown in India.
Created a unitary and highly centralized administrative structure.
