17th Mumbai International Film Festival for Documentary, Short Fiction and Animation films
17th Mumbai International Film Festival for Documentary, Short Fiction and Animation films will begin in Mumbai today On 29.5.2022.
The opening ceremony of the weeklong biennial event will take place at the Nehru Centre, Worli. All the screenings will be done in the Films Division Complex, which has state-of-the-art auditoriums. The complex, which also houses the National Museum of Indian Cinema is fully geared up to host the festival.
MIFF has got an overwhelming response from filmmakers across the world, receiving a whopping eight hundred 08 film entries from 30 countries.

Out of these, 102 films will be screened under the Competition Category, 35 in international competition and 67 in the national competition. 18 Films will be screened under ‘MIFF Prism Category’
The Best Film of the Festival will receive the Golden Conch award, along with a cash prize of 10 lakh rupees. Other awards carry cash awards varying from five to one lakh along with Silver Conch, trophy and certificate.
The Dr. V Shantaram Lifetime Achievement Award that carries a cash award of 10 lakh Rs, Golden Conch and a citation will be presented to a filmmaker of eminence for their seminal contribution to documentary films will also be presented.
In commemoration of Bangladesh’s 50 years of Independence the country has been chosen as the ‘Country of Focus’ this year. A special package of 11 films from Bangladesh including critically acclaimed film " Hasina- A Daughter’s Tale" will be presented at the festival. By
Netflix original series "Mighty Little Bheem: I love Taj Mahal" episode will make its World Premiere.
The first animation film co-produced by India and Japan ‘Ramayana: The Legend of Prince Rama’, will also have its special screening.
INS Gomati decommissioned
Having served the nation and the Indian Navy with great distinction for 34 eventful years, INS Gomati was decommissioned at sunset at the Naval Dockyard in Mumbai today, in an elegant, solemn and poignant ceremony. The ship was paid off under the command of Captain Sudip Malik.
INS Gomati:
- INS Gomati derives her name from the vibrant river Gomti and was commissioned on 16 April 1988 by the Hon’ble Raksha Mantri, Shri KC Pant, at Mazgaon Dock Ltd, Bombay.
- The third ship of the Godavari class guided-missile frigates, INS Gomati was also the oldest warrior of the Western Fleet when decommissioned
- During her service, she participated in Operations Cactus, Parakram and Rainbow, and several bilateral and multinational naval exercises.
- For her remarkable spirit and stellar contribution to national maritime security, she was twice awarded the coveted Unit Citation, once in 2007-08 and again in 2019-20.
- After her decommissioning, the ship's legacy will be kept alive in an open air museum being set up on by the picturesque banks of the eponymous river Gomti in Lucknow where several of her combat systems will be displayed as military and war relics.

Hindi author Geetanjali Shree’s novel रेत_समाधि, 'Tomb of Sand' wins International BookerPrize , becoming 1st novel translated from Hindi to do so. GeetanjaliShree is not only the award’s first Hindi winner, but also it is for 1st time a book originally written in any Indian language has won the booker prize. The novel translated by Daisy Rockwell has won 50,000 Pounds prize - which will be split between author and translator equally.
TombofSand is the story about an 80-year-old woman, who slips into a deep depression when her husband dies, then resurfaces to gain a new lease on life. The woman travels to Pakistan to confront the unresolved trauma of her teenage experiences of Partition, and re-evaluates what it means to be a mother, a daughter, a woman and a feminist.
World Hypertension Day:
It is celebrated on May 17 every year to create awareness about hypertension and its symptoms. Theme of this year is Measure Your Blood Pressure Accurately, Control It, Live Longer.
Hypertension, also known as high blood pressure, occurs when the blood pressure rises to the level of 140/90. Over a billion people suffer from hypertension globally. It is one of the major causes of cardiovascular disease and premature death. Though hypertension is usually experienced by older people, it is now being seen in the younger population as well.

New Appointment:
Vinai Kumar Saxena to be the Lt. Governor of Delhi with effect from the date he assumes charge.

He said that the Government has brought talented Indian startups from the field of film making to Cannes for helping them pitch to an international audience. He informed that language is no longer a barrier and regional movies from India are now getting global attention.

Manipur: State-Level ShiruiLilyFestival2022 to begin today. i,e on 25 th may 2022 This annual festival is organised by Department of Tourism, Government of Manipur in an aim to create and raise awareness on ShiruiLily flower which is also State Flower of Manipur.
ShiruiLily flower is found in Ukhrul district of Manipur only & cannot be replanted anywhere in the world. This year, some of international rock bands will perform in the festival. Every year, tourists both domestic, international attend the function.
#Punishment:
A Delhi court awarded life imprisonment to Kashmiri separatist Yasin Malik, who had earlier pleaded guilty to all the charges, including those under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA), in a terror funding case.
The NIA had sought death penalty before the Delhi court for Malik. The Investigative agency told Special Judge Praveen Singh in in-chamber proceedings that Malik was responsible for the Kashmiri exodus.
The amicus curiae appointed by the court to assist Malik, had sought minimum punishment, life imprisonment in the matter. The judge, however, said that since he has already been convicted, there was no point in arguing on the facts of the case and that he was already given the opportunity.
